Home Safety Checks
Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service is doing its best to stop fires in the home by offering free Home Safety Checks across Edinburgh. During the Home Safety Check, Firefighters, who work in pairs, will advise you on fire safety matters such as; the safe use of electrical appliances, smokers materials and candles as well as highlighting the potential hazards of cooking. The Firefighters will also stress the importance of having a working smoke alarm and will supply and fit, free smoke detectors, complete with ten year batteries, if you need them.
The service is both free and confidential and available to everyone. To arrange a visit, or for any information on Fire Safety, phone free on 0800 169 0320.
Fire Service Youth Projects
The ECSP also assists in the funding of two Fire Service youth projects, Cool Down Crew and The Phoenix Programme.
Cool Down Crew
Cool Down Crew is a diversionary programme based on fire service activities (ladder climbing, pump drills, etc.). This unique experiential learning opportunity gives young people, who would benefit from the positive role model the fire service can provide, the opportunity to learn practical skills, build self confidence and promote good citizenship by encouraging effort, teamwork and good behaviour.
Included in the programme is information on;
- fire safety and the dangers of hoax calls/wilful fire raising
- speeding, drink and driving
- first aid; and
- issues such as drink/drug awareness and other personal issues.
At the end of the course participants attend a closing ceremony where they are presented certificates of achievement from the Fire Board.
The Phoenix Programme
The Phoenix Progamme is open to any young person between the ages of 13-18 years old who is interested in the Fire Service. Participants are given technical fire service input as well as instucted on how to carry out basic fire service drills.
The aims of the programme are to contribute in the development of young people into responsible citizens, improve their life skills, and to promote fire and community safety. The programme, though serious, is also enjoyable and naturally fosters the spirit of adventure and leadership.
The Phoenix Programme takes place one evening per week. Contact Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service for further information.
